Pittsburgh WordPress Design and Development

For businesses already on WordPress, and those who want to be

WordPress runs a large share of the web, and it runs a lot of Pittsburgh businesses. We design and build on it, and just as often we take over a site somebody else built and walked away from.

Already have a WordPress site?

Most of the WordPress work we do is not building from scratch. It is picking up a site that was built two, five, or ten years ago and has quietly fallen behind. Plugins out of date. A theme nobody supports anymore. Pages that load slowly on a phone. A contact form that stopped sending emails and nobody noticed for a month.

If that sounds like your site, the first step costs nothing. Send us the address and we will tell you what is actually wrong with it, in plain language, whether or not you hire us.

What a Pittsburgh WordPress developer should actually do

Updates, tested first

WordPress core, themes and plugins kept current, applied where we can see what breaks before you do. An update that takes a site down on a Friday is worse than no update.

Security and monitoring

Hardening, malware scanning, and uptime monitoring, so a problem reaches us before it reaches your customers.

Backups that restore

Off-site backups taken regularly and, more importantly, tested. A backup nobody has restored is a hope, not a backup.

Speed people notice

Most slow WordPress sites are slow for two or three specific reasons. We find them rather than guessing, because page speed is a ranking factor and a bounce factor at the same time.

Content changes

Send us the change. New staff member, updated hours, a new service page. We handle it rather than you relearning the editor every few months.

A person who answers

You reach the person doing the work. No ticket queue, no account manager relaying messages to somebody you never speak to.

WordPress website design, built properly

When WordPress is the right fit, usually because your team wants to edit the site themselves or you need a specific plugin ecosystem, we build it the way it should be built: a clean theme rather than a bloated pre-made one, only the plugins the site actually needs, structured for search from the first page, and set up so the people who use it can update it without breaking anything.

The difference between a WordPress site that works and one that becomes a liability is usually decided in the first week of the build. A page builder that adds forty kilobytes to every page, a theme with features you will never use, a stack of plugins each doing one small job: all of it is invisible on launch day and painful two years later.

When WordPress is not the right fit, we will say so. Plenty of small business sites are faster, cheaper to run and safer as custom builds, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something heavier than you need.

Taking over a site we did not build

This is routine for us, and it is most of what a WordPress expert actually gets asked to do. Somebody built the site, the relationship ended, and now nobody knows the login, the host, or why the contact form goes to an inbox that no longer exists.

We start with a review of what is there: hosting, theme, plugins, backups, security, speed, and whether anything is actively broken. You get a written summary of what we found and what it would take to put right, before you commit to anything ongoing.

You keep ownership of your site, your domain, and your hosting. If you ever leave, everything goes with you and any competent developer can pick it up. No proprietary lock-in, no hostage situations, which is more than can be said for how some of these sites reach us.

Who we do this for

WordPress design and management in Pittsburgh works out best for:

Businesses inheriting a site

The person who built it is gone, and you need somebody who can pick it up without starting over.

Owners who want to edit it themselves

You want to change your own hours, staff and prices without paying for every small edit.

Sites that need a specific plugin

Booking systems, membership areas, event calendars, or an existing integration that already works.

Anyone tired of a slow site

The site loads badly on a phone, and nobody has been able to tell you why in language you can use.

Custom WordPress development

Some jobs are not design work at all. A booking flow that has to match how you actually take appointments, a product feed that pulls from a supplier, a members area, a calculator, a form that has to land in the system you already run on rather than an inbox.

That is WordPress development rather than WordPress design, and it is where most off-the-shelf themes and plugins run out of road. We write what the job needs and leave the rest out, because every plugin added to solve one problem is another thing to update, another thing that can break, and another few tenths of a second on every page load.

If you have been told something is not possible on WordPress, it usually is. The real question is whether it should be built there, and that is worth ten minutes on the phone before anybody quotes you for it.

Serving Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania

We work with businesses across Allegheny County and the surrounding areas: the North Hills, the South Hills, the East End, Sewickley, Cranberry, Wexford, Monroeville, Mount Lebanon, Bethel Park, Robinson, Moon and Peters Township.

Being local matters more for this than it does for a lot of web work. When a site goes down on a Tuesday morning, you want somebody in your time zone who knows your business, not a support queue three time zones away working from a ticket.

Common questions

How much does WordPress design cost in Pittsburgh?

A new WordPress build for a small business generally runs from $3,000 to $10,000 depending on how many pages you need and what has to be built. Ongoing management is a monthly arrangement and is quoted after we see the site. You get real numbers after a free review, not a range designed to get you on a call.

Do I have to move my hosting to you?

No. We can work with your current host. If your hosting is genuinely holding the site back we will tell you and explain the options, but the decision is yours and the account stays in your name.

What if my site was built by someone I no longer work with?

That is most of the sites we take on. We just need administrator access to the site and the hosting account. If you are not sure what you have, we can usually work it out from the domain alone.

Do you work with freelancers or agencies too?

Yes. Some of our WordPress work is white label, picking up maintenance for designers who build sites but do not want to look after them afterward.

Do you lock me into a contract?

No. Management is month to month. We would rather earn the next month than hold you to a year.

Should I be on WordPress at all?

Sometimes the honest answer is no. If your site is five pages of information that rarely changes, a custom build is faster, cheaper to run and has nothing to patch. We build those too, so we have no reason to push you either way. See our custom website design and development page.

Can you also handle the SEO?

Yes, and they work better together. A fast, well-structured WordPress site is the foundation local SEO work builds on. Plenty of clients start with management and add SEO once the site is solid.

Send us your web address and what is bothering you about the site. We will take a look and come back with an honest assessment, whether or not you end up hiring us.
