Website Design and Development
A school district site parents can actually use
Environmental Charter School is a tuition-free public K-12 charter district in Pittsburgh, teaching more than a thousand students across multiple school buildings. Their line is "We grow citizens," and the whole school is built around learning with, from, and for the living world.
A district website serves an unusual mix of readers at once: prospective parents deciding where to send a child, current families looking for a calendar or a menu, and staff who need to publish updates without a developer in the loop.
The site had grown to more than seventy pages, and the two journeys that matter most had become the hardest to complete.
Enrollment is the front door of a charter school. A family that cannot work out how to apply, or what the steps and deadlines are, quietly applies somewhere else. The process lived across scattered pages and was harder to follow than the process actually is.
Athletics had a different problem: parents needed one place to see teams, schedules and signups, and there was no real athletics home at all.
This is an ongoing engagement rather than a one-off build, which is how school websites actually stay useful.
We redesigned the site around a lighter system built on the school's own identity, and rebuilt the pages families use most. The enrollment section now walks through the process in plain steps: who can apply, what happens when, and one obvious place to start. It is driving more engagement than the old scattered version, because a process people can follow is one they finish.
The new athletics section gives every team a home, with schedules and signups in one place, so managing a kid's activities stops meaning phone calls and forwarded emails.
Alongside the pages, we are reworking content and search visibility across the site, and building out the school newsletter so what the school publishes reaches families instead of sitting on a page nobody revisits.
The application process is laid out in plain steps with one obvious place to start. Clearer process, more families finishing it.
Teams, schedules and signups together, so parents manage their kids' activities from one page instead of a chain of emails.
Ongoing management: content, search visibility and the school newsletter, so the site stays accurate through every school year.
Every project here started with a conversation about what the business actually needed. Yours can start the same way.
